Comparison

The best translation management systems for product teams

Eight tools compared on what they cost, what they count and who each one suits. We make LocalizeMe, so it is on the list, and so are the cases where it is the wrong choice. Every price was read from each vendor's own pricing page on 15 October 2026.

The short version

  • LocalizeMe: flat price, no string or language limits, for product teams.
  • Lokalise: dedicated localization teams with automation needs and the budget for it.
  • Crowdin: open-source and community translation, and a huge integration catalogue.
  • Phrase: enterprises translating both software and documents in one suite.
  • POEditor: small projects that will stay small, with a simple interface.
  • Tolgee: teams that need open source and self-hosting.
  • Transifex: teams that want AI translation at volume with unlimited seats.
  • Localazy: small apps that want built-in AI translation and unlimited languages.

Prices and limits side by side

The biggest difference between these tools is what the bill counts. Some count strings or keys, some count words once per language, some count seats, and one counts AI-translated words. Price each one at the size your product will be in a year.

Each tool, and who it is for

LocalizeMe

Best for product teams that want a flat price and developer tooling

Keys, plurals, review status, screenshots for context, history, a CLI, a REST API and an MCP server for coding agents, with exports in ten file formats. The Mobile plan adds over-the-air string updates for iOS and Android. This is our product.

Pricing: Free plan, then Pro at €19 a month per workspace with unlimited members, or Mobile at €39 a month for over-the-air updates. Monthly or yearly, excl. VAT.

Look elsewhere if you need machine translation built in, self-hosting, or tools for managing translation vendors and clients.

Lokalise

Best for localization teams that run vendors, automations and AI translation at scale

A full platform with a large integration catalogue, workflow automation, machine and AI translation, and over-the-air SDKs. Much of it goes unused by a small team that only needs keys, review and exports.

Pricing: Explorer $149 a month, Growth $379 a month, Advanced $1,049 a month, Enterprise on request. Plan limits cover hosted words and seats, among others.

Look elsewhere if you are a small team, or you want a predictable bill as words and people grow.

Crowdin

Best for open-source projects and products translated by a community

A large, capable platform with unlimited translators on paid plans, unlimited public projects, a free licence for open-source projects and over 700 integrations. Machine translation and AI run through a prepaid balance.

Pricing: Pro from €46 a month (60,000 hosted words) and Team from €139 a month (100,000), billed annually, with monthly billing also offered; Team+ from €417 a month (500,000), annual only; Business on request. Prices exclude VAT.

Look elsewhere if you add languages often, since every word counts again for each target language and moves you toward the next tier.

Phrase

Best for large companies and language service providers with software and document work

Phrase combines a software string manager (Phrase Strings) with a document TMS, machine translation, AI and quality tooling, and sells separate plans to freelancers and language service providers.

Pricing: Software UI/UX is €495 a month billed annually, with 15 Strings seats and 1 million managed words. Team is €1,195 a month billed annually; Business and Enterprise are on request.

Look elsewhere if you are a small product team; the entry plan is priced for organisations.

POEditor

Best for small projects with a stable, modest number of strings

A long-standing, straightforward tool with Git, Slack and Teams integrations on every plan. Its plans are set almost entirely by how many strings you store.

Pricing: Free up to 1,000 strings; Start $20, Plus $60, Premium $160 and Enterprise $260 a month for 3,000 to 100,000 strings. Paying yearly takes 15% off.

Look elsewhere if your app is growing, since adding copy or languages moves you up a tier.

Tolgee

Best for teams that must self-host, or want in-context editing in a web app

Open source, with in-context editing inside your running web app, machine translation credits and a free self-hosted edition. The cloud plans are metered by words.

Pricing: Free cloud tier of 30,000 hosted words; Translate €58, Optimise €133 and Manage €373 a month, billed annually. Self-hosted licences are on request.

Look elsewhere if you want to add languages without the bill moving, since words count again per language.

Transifex

Best for companies that translate a lot by AI and want one volume-based rate

Transifex now sells a single plan priced on AI-translated words, with unlimited collaborators, hosted content and projects. Human review does not count toward usage. Third-party machine translation is not part of the plan.

Pricing: Not published. The rate depends on your AI translation volume and is quoted by sales.

Look elsewhere if you want to see a price before talking to sales, or you translate mostly by hand.

Localazy

Best for small app teams that want machine and AI translation built in

Counts source keys only, so translating into more languages does not change the plan. Plans include credits for machine and AI translation, and translations can be delivered over the air or by CDN.

Pricing: Free up to 200 source keys; Professional $41, Autopilot $94 and Business $210 a month ($34, $78 and $175 billed annually) for 1,000, 3,500 and 10,000 keys.

Look elsewhere if you expect thousands of keys, since each key tier is a price step.

When LocalizeMe is the wrong choice

LocalizeMe is built for product teams who write their own copy and have it translated by colleagues, freelancers or an agency. It is the wrong pick if:

  • You want machine translation built in. LocalizeMe has none; Lokalise, Crowdin, Phrase, Localazy and Tolgee all include it.
  • You must self-host. LocalizeMe is a hosted service only; Tolgee is open source and can be run on your own servers.
  • You are a translation agency or vendor managing many clients. Phrase and Crowdin have plans and workflows built for that.
  • You need a large catalogue of ready-made integrations with CMSs and design tools. Crowdin and Lokalise have far more.

How we compared them

This list is for teams localizing a software product: an app, a website or both. We looked at what a team of that kind pays as it grows, what each plan counts, and whether a tool has the parts such teams ask for first: machine translation, self-hosting, an API and native file exports. Tools aimed mainly at translating documents or marketing sites are left out.

Questions

What is the best translation management system?

It depends on what you translate and how you pay. For a product team that wants a flat price and no string limits, LocalizeMe. For community or open-source translation, Crowdin. For self-hosting, Tolgee. For large localization teams, Lokalise or Phrase.

Which translation management system has a free plan?

LocalizeMe, Crowdin, POEditor, Tolgee and Localazy have free plans, each with different limits. Lokalise and Phrase offer 14-day trials instead, and Transifex does not publish a free plan.

Which translation management systems can be self-hosted?

Of the tools here, Tolgee is open source and can be self-hosted. The others, LocalizeMe included, are hosted services.

Why do TMS prices vary so much?

Because they count different things. A tool that counts words once per language gets more expensive with every language you add; one that counts strings grows with your copy; per-seat pricing grows with your team. Price each tool at your size a year from now.
